Malaysia is not part of Geneva international convention and does not recognize political refugee status. Yet, Many asylum seekers are tolerated on the territory, but can’t obtain official papers protecting them from returning to persecutions they will suffer in their country. They can't neither access health care, school, worship and basic rights. Even when they have been hosted for decades, a large number of stateless people have no official existence or nationality, in the eyes of the country.
In 2014, UNHCR launched its #iBelong #iExist campaign to draw attention to the problem and advocate for the eradication of statelessness at a world scale.
